ι good hair day

Today I will try to answer Márlenas question how to find a hairdresser you can trust!

For some people it´s  a never ending tragedy – they just don´t find their personal hairstyler. And may be it´s not their own fault. It´s like a curse.  For this  I have no answer.

Luckily some are in gooood hands. Like me. I just looooove my dear Katharina. For more than six years I regularly sit on her dressing stool and juuuust reeeelaaaax. Because I trust her. And that´s the whole thing. It´s all about chemistry.

It´s not only that we found the perfect colour mix to give my hair the young attitude it deserves (as posted here). And it´s not about the daily-life-stories we know from each other. Weddings, births, deaths. Actually I understand everyone who keeps silent during the whole cut-and-style-process. I just love to chit-chat. And in my case it´s a long procedure: highlighting, waiting for the colour to take effect, washing, shampooing, hair mask, again washing, cutting, blowing, ready to go! Two-and-a half hours later.

But the outcome is a presentable shock of hair. I just float out of the salon and feel like a butterfly. Smiling. Heading towards new successes! Thank you Katherina ; )

But even I had nightmares with hairdressers in former days.

My worst day was in Paris about twelve years ago. My husband and I were looking forward to a theatre evening appointment. This was probably the impulse for me to visit a coiffeur on that day. And here I come to the next VERY important point for finding the right one: you need a personal recommendation of someone with a great haircut.

I had no references. Like remote-controlled I just entered the next salon. Either  atmospherics or hormonal unbalances made my brain think about cutting my beautiful hair short. The hairdresser was a raw young no-one without any life-or-work-experience. We were almost the only people in this nice place (the shop itself was one of the better known). But where the hell was her boss? She probably would have stopped her from cutting my beautiful hair off!

Looking like a cleaning-mop and too young to complain I left the salon quiet and under shock. My way home took me through Rue Mouffetard, a street full of shops, restaurants and people. Wasn´t everyone staring at me? You know, like “Look at HER – where is SHE from? She looks terrible…!”…But worse was yet to come. At home I decided to give it another try and checked out the next salon. This time I left the shop crying… and the people in Rue Mouffetard really stared at me.. My gentle husband accompanied me on my visit to a third salon that day. The hairdresser pampered me like a baby. The result was acceptable. But my hair was short. For a loooong time….

So this is my advice:

  1. find someone with a great haircut and colour you can trust
  2. ask her / him for a personal reference. Obviously he / she has someone who knows his /her onions
  3. test the chemistry between this  hair stylist and you – does it flow? Do you really feel relaxed even with eyes closed?  If so, be happy.
  4. If not, just step out and run away. Stay as you are or try the next one.
  5. Be assured: it´s not about the effort or the price. It´s only about the result.

What about your experiences with barbers? Do you have further recommendations how to find the perfect hair stylist? Or do you cut your hair all by yourself? I really know at least three ladies who do that….  Just remember, it´s only about the result ; )

Have a great (hair ) day and stay tuned! JL
